Once upon a time there was a prince who was in love with a princess who didn’t love him back. To try and win her heart, the prince decided to send her exotic gifts. The first gift he sent was a pair of pink rabbits. If you take off the two outer petals of the bleeding heart flower, and sit them on their sides, they look like the silhouettes of bunnies. The second gift the prince sent were a pair of beautiful slippers- represented by the inner two white petals. (Some say they’re long, jeweled earrings). However, the princess still refused the prince. Dejected, he took a dagger and stabbed himself. If you look at what’s left of the flower, there’s a heart shaped core, and a dagger shaped thin stalk running through the middle. The princess then realized that she did in fact love the prince, and mourned his death. For the rest of her days, her heart bled for her prince. And that is why the flower is called Bleeding Heart.
